Yet ANOTHER Earthquake

Post by Monroe »

Yeah I don't care what Tyyr says, this is not a normal spell of Earthquakes. I'm not saying its because of anything freaky other than coincidence but four 7+ earthquakes in 3 months is insane and then that 6.2 or something thrown in there for good measure.

I wasn't as close with this one as I was with the California Earthquake. I had guessed Japan- but same region. I'm guessing next one will be somewhere around Europe, maybe Italy.

Kali-ma!

Hmm.. Needs more hearts.

To be serious though, this seems like a lot of activity to me.

From Wikipedia :
The USGS estimates that, since 1900, there have been an average of 18 major earthquakes (magnitude 7.0-7.9) and one great earthquake (magnitude 8.0 or greater) per year, and that this average has been relatively stable.
There's a Magnitude 7 - 7.9 earthquake on average once every 20 days, and always has been. Four in 3 months is 1 every 22.5 days, which is slightly BELOW average, and hardly anything to be excited by.

The rule of thumb is that as you go down a magnitude, the frequency increases tenfold. That means the 20 days which see one 7-7.9 will also see ten 6-6.9, a hundred 5-5.9, and a thousand 4-4.9, etc. So throwing in a 6.2 doesn't alter things in the least.

Sorry, simply not a big deal.

I guess maybe they're just covering it a lot more. Seems odd this year has been full of earthquakes and previous years it didn't seem like this. Population didn't increase -that- much between 09 and 10.

I think there's just been a higher percentage of large quakes hitting population centers rather than in the middle of the Pacific.

Yeah I don't care what Tyyr says,
There's also statistics and the USGS.

But ya know, don't let facts and reality get in the way of your delusions, you never have before.

It could easily be that some of this year's earthquakes have hit populated centers when in the past they've not done so as much. Or it could be that they've hit when there wasn't a lot else in the news, so they've got bigger coverage.

I'd say it's just a case of them recently hitting populated areas, whereas last year they hit less populated areas.
