Tax on soda

Post by Monroe »

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090730/hl ... 0730232047
The CSPI, which has advocated for health, nutrition and food safety in the United States since 1971, says a soft drink tax would "be a great way to pay for health reform and expansion" and wants to see such a tax imposed nationally.

A tax on soft drinks was included as a possible option in the health reform bill drafted by the Senate finance committee, said Greenstein, although she was unsure if the proposed levy would make it through to the final version of the proposed health care legislation.
This is bullshit. Out of every thing to tax why soda. Its not my fault that I can maintain my weight and fat fucks can't. :madashell:

If their thinking is tax things that make people fat why not just tax fat people?

That's a common misconception. Diet soda is actually less healthy than normal soda. Since your body processes sugar better than the crap diet soda replaces it with.

Then what the hell would I do? For the record, my diabetes is type 1, not the type brought on by obesity. Also, technically fruit juice and water are soft drinks.

You know, I actually don't have a problem with taxing pop. We do it here, it's covered under the GST (probably the PST as well). Not to the extent that this article proposes but if America ever gets a better regulated health care system then everyone is going to be paying for the care of others. Get used to it.

I actually can't drink regular pop (well it won't kill me but it's unpleasant), it gives me horrible headaches, the shakes, makes my heart race, etc. Especially Coke.

Coke gives you diabetes.

Diet Coke gives you cancer... I know which one I prefer.

OK...where'd you get that?

You know what's funny about all this tax crap? Look at the UN survey's and such that rank quality of life, the top three are socialist (OMG! EVIL!) with high taxes. Yet the quality of life is high, people are happy, they live longer.

Now, if Americans don't want the tax burden, fine fair enough but perhaps they should stop complaining about the way things are. You can't fix things or have services without paying for it. That's a large part of why the nation and to a lesser extent other nations are in the state we are today. We want stuff, we don't want to pay for it.

I don't pay tax anymore but when I did, I lost at least 30%, my folks lose over 50% but it's worth it for what you get.

And before someone jumps my shit, screaming I hate the US. I don't hate the US, I just find it frustrating that the populace wants something for nothing. I have the same attitude toward the tards in Ontario who oppose the HST (combining the Federal and Provincial tax) but still demand roads and hospitals.

Normally I would jump ugly on you, but you're unfortunately dead on in your assessment of the typical American attitude.

BTW - Coke doesn't "give" you diabetes or cancer any more than it gives you the Black Plague.

Screw banning anything. Smokers and drinkers have been paying increasingly high taxes for years to support things that benefit teetotalers; I think it's time to spread the discomfort around and tax anything that makes people happy.

Candy, soda, chips (and assorted junk food)? Tax it.

Movie theaters, DVDs, music and other entertainment? Tax it.

Fancy shoes, expensive purses and brand-name clothes? 200% tax.

Find a way to tax exercise, and sex. Maybe a tax on gym memberships and a tax for each child you have.

And finally, most importantly, make a donation to a secular charity? Tax free. Give one cent to a church of any kind? Pay 200% of that to the government.

This way, no one is happy, and programs that help people get what they need (like healthcare and education) are paid for.

Either that, or we could turn welfare into an education, job training, and placement program on a limited schedule (say four years), and we wouldn't have to tax any of those things by saving the $400 billion a year we spend on that.

The whole concept of getting people to do healthier things by imposing an arbitrary punitive cost pisses me off, BTW.

Yeah. It irritates me too. If they're wanting to tax the unhealthy people for being unhealthy why don't they just tax them based on their body weight (That is measured at say the DMV when they want to get their driver's license). Fat people is the reason the health costs for this country are so high. Tax the people responsible.
