What I don't understand is how the Republicans are all "let the free market take care of everything, government interference is BAD!", and yet when the free market dictates that a few big companies go bust, the Republican's first reaction is that the US taxpayer must stump up $700 billion to help them out. What's up with that? Has the Elephant gone all *gasp* socialist on us?

Silly non-American, thinking that politicians over here are motivated by consistency, integrity, or civic responsibility! :P

I can bet that the reason for the laissez-faire Republicans are goign all gung-ho for bailout is because some well-placed Elephants have large interests in some of the companies to be affected. [/cynicism]

Interesting, though, that the idea of caps for the incomes of affected companies didn't dawn on anyone until House dems got a hold of it...

Actually, it's the Republicans in Congress that are holding things up. And they are accusing Bush of socialism for suggesting it.

Yes; I didn't mean to indicate that the Dems were stalling it, just that they introduced the salary cap idea. And it is a bit humorous to see the House Republicans throwing the accusations of "socialism" around, when their presidential candidate has switched from wanting to let things be to taking an active hand in bailout.

Cable News networks have it up almost as a tie. CNN Said Obama won, MSN said McCain won. But I found this:

I thought that was a spot on annaylasis of each one's part. Seemed Obama nudged McCain out barely in McCain's strongest catagory.

McCain really shot himself in the foot by trying to suspend the campaign. He gambled that Obama would just helpfully follow his lead. When he didn't, McCaim was left with two options:
1) stay out of the debate, and make himself look like a coward and give Obama a chance to explain his positions without and intereference from McCain, or
2) turn up for the debate, showing himself to be following Obama's lead and also showing that he never really gave a damn about the stuff he claimed to when he tried to hold everything up.

I started off wanting McCain but the more this campaign goes on, the more I want to vote Bill Clinton back in.

Teaos, this is twice in a row you've agreed with me...

Anyhow... seems like we're on a shit run with our country. I'm sure we'll pull out of it in a decade or two.
