Oh, I didn't say it wasn't funny, but she's so easy to make fun, I mean really, Darwinism isn't a viable option, no, I'm not creationist, oh, and god can't be proven because there's no evidence, so I think it just shouldn't be mentioned...

I mean, I can make fun of her, and that's saying something, I suck at making fun of people.

Coulter vs Paxman. Bets, anyone?
Holy sh*t. I've finally found an extremist to hate more than Sarah Palin.

It's Paxman. This is the man who's famous for asking the same question more than a dozen times once when some politician tried to dodge it.

Ask and ye shall receive

Apparently (according to Howard when Paxman brought it up while interviewing him on an entirely separate subject a decade later) he didn't threaten to overrule him.

You just don't like her humor (or much of anything she does). Not that I'm a fan of hers either, but I do feel like there's a double standard in effect over who can use offensive humor.

Though she's getting press over this which will probably drive up book sales, so she's probably enjoying this.

Really? Come on. Don't be a Coulter apologist - there aren't enough hours in the day.

As to your analogy - nope. Stewart and Franken (before he ran for office) were comedy writers and comedians. South Park and Family Guy are comedies. You may find their humor beyond the pale, or tasteless, or whatever; but they are supposed to make funnies even if they are bad ones. Ann Coulter purports to be a pundit, analyst, and critical author - not a stand-up. It's got nothing to do with her ideology. Your analogy is tantamount to saying that The Washington Post is justified in running a journalistically-irresponsible hoax or parody, because, well, Spy or National Lampoon ran something similar. You honestly think that if Howard Feinman said the same things that Coulter did he wouldn't be pilloried the same way? If you do, you're delusional. The only difference is that Feinman is a responsible and thoughtful analyst, and therefore wouldn't say those things.

Ah yes, her books are nothing but seriousiousness and jurnalistic intergrity incarnate with titles like:

How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must)
and
If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans

She isn't a political commentator (or Senator) hiding under a shield of having previously been a comedian. But she certainly isn't a "responsible and thoughtful analyst". She is an entertainer, a self described polemic.

Perhaps a better comparison would be Cenk from the Young Turks.

She provides her readership/listeners with the same basic thing, a smile, a laugh, and wraps them up in a fuzzy insulating coccon that tells them they're right about what they believe and everyone else is silly and stupid.

Granted she started out serious, but she's found a way to reach and amuse an audience that has made her wealthy.

I don't agree with her a whole lot, and sometimes I wonder if she truely believes everything she writes, but I'm confident she knows what she's doing, and she does it well.

The real bitch of it is this will get lots and lots of play and they will always drop, "Conservative," or "Republican" before her name to boot.

@ Sunny - come on, man. She continually appears on editorial or even hard news programs (at least as much of one as Fox News is) as an analyst, pundit, or other type of stuffed shirt. She portrays herself to be a jopurnalist, if an editorial one, despite the use of a mocking tone. Franken wrote for SNL, for Pete's sake. Also, it occurs to me that none of the people or shows you mention singled out a member of an ethnicity in their audience to be the target of a slur. The final analysis is that it doesn't matter a rat's ass if other outlets have made jokes in bad taste; the fact remains that what she did was unconscionable.

@ Tyyr - you're right. The GOP could do itself a world of good by just distancing themselves from the talking anuses like Rush, Beck, and Coulter. Why do they hang on to them so much? They've got Palin, Steele, and Jindal if they need their own talking anuses.

I really have no idea. I will still insist that Beck is an entertainer first and foremost. He's got a schtick and he goes with it. Coulter and Rush though honestly try to pass themselves off as voices of reason and informed opinion.
