Hey, I just found out how this bullshit got through. Apparently it was tagged onto the back of a proposal to assist police in tackling gang crime and no discussion on the matter actualy took place.
There's simply no fucking way the courts are going to uphold this idiocy. Technicaly, everyone in the country should now fall victim to this law, as not being a believer automaticaly makes you a blasphemer to the vast majority of religions.

Apparently it's been couched as a mere tidying up of constitutional loose ends, because the Irish constitution says "The publication or utterance of blasphemous, seditious, or indecent matter is an offence which shall be punishable in accordance with law," but until now there has been no anti-blasphemy law on the books. If it's not overturned in the Irish courts, do you think it could be taken to the European Court of Human Rights?

That wording was originaly there because Eamon De Valera, the first prime minister, pandered to the religious crowd for support while Collins, Griffith and co took a slightly more secular stance.
And we haven't had one until now because we've previously had people with brains running the country who realise such a rule is utter bullshit.
I say we start a petition to get every politician in the country fined under this new act for blasphemy. The charge? Not believing in Allah's existance as the one true god. That's blasphemy you criminals!

Arguably you could ban the sacred texts of most major religions under this law.

Ya, I know...basicly it's comparable to a tree, with three split off branches. Judaism is the trunk, and owns one of the branches. Christianity splits from the trunk because they (we) believe that Jesus was the Son of God. Islam splits later over the teaching of the prophet Mohammad.
