Wouldn't that be something?
They say that in the Army,
the women are mighty fine.
They look like Phyllis Diller,
and walk like Frankenstein.

That would be an interesting development indeed.

I'm skeptical. This is like the 6th 'cure' discovered in 10 years. Each one turns out to be unpromissing.

None. They always surrender right before they finish the job and never tell you why.

Call me cynical, but I have the distinct feeling that drug manufacturers are enjoying the extreme profits from treating diseases like AIDS too much to put any serious effort into cures. Hopefully some independant research will find the answer.

I'll wait 'till something good actualy comes of it to start jumping for joy, but it sure as hell is good news.

Re: Wow. Maybe we can do something useful after all
Drug companies don't usually do this sort of research, universities do. The drug companies usually take over once the science is sorted. This guy works for the University of California, San Francisco. There's no conspiracy in these things it's just that this sort of thing take time to turn into something useful. 5 to 10 years is not unusual to turn a discovery like this into something real. It's a truly interesting article though.

Ian - is this related to the beta-cell implantation experiments going on currently?

This isn't completely, but it's typical of such things. There used to be a science program on the BBC, called Tomorrows World, it used to show new tech and talk a bit about the way it worked. People used to complain all the time the the stuff in it never made it into real life. A lot of it did, it just took a lot longer than people expected.Mikey wrote:Ian - is this related to the beta-cell implantation experiments going on currently?

I know about the processes and time frames involved in going from research to production; I was referring to the research itself.

In that case, no I don't think so I fairly sure this is AIDS research.

It also ended up looking quite different to what people expected, too.A lot of it did, it just took a lot longer than people expected.

Yes, I know this is HIV research - I meant the underlying idea of implanting something to produce a desired component, whether that component is an antibody or a beta cell.IanKennedy wrote:In that case, no I don't think so I fairly sure this is AIDS research.

I don't think they're related in any particular way, but obviously people learn from what others do.
