You make it sound easy, but it's not - many of those "swing" voters are people who are normally unintentioned to vote at all; and those tend to vote Democrat IF they get out at all.
Historically McCain does good with independents. However the whole marching toe and heel with Bush probbly hurt any chances of that.

None. They always surrender right before they finish the job and never tell you why.

He's often opposed Bush actually. Just because he doesn't want to run straight out of Iraq doesn't make him a Bush clone.

However he's going to have to work to make that clear. I'm sure the Dems will try to paint him as Bush 2.0 .

Okay when he wasn't running for President he is moderately independent but everything in the campaign trail has been a Bush clone.

He's a Bush clone now, his first campaign he was pretty moderate (for a republitard). Now he's had to sell out to get the nomnation, which makes little to no sense given Bush's approval ratings. The worst in US history and people want another one?

Perhaps if Obama wins than the GOP will fracture into seperate parties representing the various interests. So the christians, small government, pro-business factions etc will have their own party, One of the greatest failings of the US political system is it's dual party deal.

The same way it works in the rest of the world, people vote for the party that best represents their interests. But because there are more parties it's harder to get a majority and then the parties have to work together to get things done and there's less chance of abusing the system.

If I'm understanding this correctly your system correctly, from what I read on Wiki, then parliament elects the President from their own ranks. Which means that the people have no choice as to who's the president. Doesn't seem like a good system to me. The leader of the country should always be elected by the people, not the government.

First off it's Prime Minister, not President. Secondly, yes the PM is voted from the party ranks but he actually has to win his seat in his riding. The PM also doesn't have the broad exective powers that El Presidante has in the US and the party that is in power can be voted out by a simple no confidence motion. So the PM and the ruling party have to ensure that everyones interests are met or their out the door.

The US system invites cults of personality like we've seen with GW and JFK that result in less than favourable people being elected. We get our share of assclowns too but their largely held in check by a strong Supreme Court and the parliament itself. For example our current PM sucks GW cock like a pro but he can't actually bring in policies against gay marriage or abortion or he'll be crucified by the Opposition, well that and the SC already ruled that they can't do it.

I think much of McCain's appeal - that of being a staunch republican but distancing himself from Bush et. al. - has been compromised within the GOP. However, that means little to a great deal of the GOP compared to the imagined evil of voting for a dove-ish *gasp* African-American.
