Florida and Michigan

Post by Teaos »

Florida and Michigan will get seated at half strength (each delegate receives one-half vote), with Michigan uncommitted delegates going to Barack Obama.

What that means:

Michigan:
Clinton, 38 Delegates and Superdelegates
Obama, 32 Delegates and Superdelegates

Florida:
Clinton, 56.5 Delegates and Superdelegates
Obama, 36 Delegates and Superdelegates

The magic number to cross the threshold for the nomination is no longer 2,025 - it is now 2,118.

Obama: 2,052 Delegates and Superdelegates
Clinton: 1,877.5 Delegates and Superdelegates

Senator Obama needs precisely 66 delegates. He will likely net 30-40 from the remaining primaries in South Dakota, Montana and Puerto Rico; he will thus need 20-30 superdelegates to become this party's nominee.

Of note: Harold Ickes, Clinton supporter, threatened the nuclear option - that he might take it to the convention.

I'm currently hearing however this will largely depend upon whether the SDs will hear the popular vote metric.

Meaning, likely not. Most SDs are turned off.

This is a complete travesty. The DNC had an established and well-known rule, and Florida and Michigan knowingly and willfully broke it with full cognizance of the consequences. Now, they don't have to suffer those conseqences? Absolutely friggin' ridiculous. If Canada had more summer and nicer beaches, I'd move.

Republicans/republican talking heads on news programs, are going to have a field day with this.
"All this has happened before --"
"But it doesn't have to happen again. Not if we make up our minds to change. Take a different path. Right here, right now."

Hillary has been causing a lot of trouble, going around Florida and Michigan and trying to rile people to sit home from the election or vote McCain if no one is going to count their votes in the primary.

I know, it seemed like Teaos had come across something concrete rather then Hillary's usual ramblings.

It sounds like he did, I smell backroom deal, Hillary probably threatened to keep going all thew ay to the convention if they didn't do something to appease her about Florida and Michigan. Nancy Pelosi said if this isn't resolved by June she's going to step in, I wish she'd just use the gavel on Hillary's head and be done with it.

It's been floated for a while that Hillary would do a backroom deal to get the nomination if she had to. She should be made to step out for the good of the party, if need be offer her some high profile but powerless position in the cabinet. Like Indian Affairs or something (if the US has it).

I hate to admit it of anyone, but I'm forced to believe she would threaten to shoot her own party in the foot rather than bow out gracefully.

Kendall - there is a Bureau of Indian Affairs, but I think the offices are located in a janitorial supply closet two basements under the Hart Building.

I agree, I'm not sure why she feels she's entitled to the nomination. What has she done besides marry Clinton and approve GW's worst policies?

No doubt, I think ours is in the spider monkey cage at the Toronto Zoo.

Well, she backpedalled on those policy approvals a few times, doesn't that count as "doing something?" Plus, she WAS married to the first Black president.

Does she truely belive that the war is wrong or is she doing it to get elected?

The first black president? Come to think of it, the way Bill gets treated he may as well be black.

Sorry I got emailed this by a cousin of mine who is a reporter in the states but I imagin most of whats in here would be all over the news.

But it is an absolute joke that these votes are to be counted. They thumb their nose's at the rules and get away with it?

The way it was put to me by a Hillary supporter is that she was Senator of New York, the state hit by 9/11, during and right after the 9/11 attacks. The mood was not a conciliatory one or a mood of understanding and civil responsibility. In other words, her own state would have hung her by the neck if she hadn't voted hard on terrorism (i.e. with Bush) on just about everything. However, there was never a "popular" time, regardless of state, to oppose Bush's stuff for the first several years of Iraq, so even if this rose shaded interpretation of Hillary's voting record is accurate, I'll stick with someone who voted the right way even when it wasn't politically advantageous.

Obama never voted for or against the war. Look in the McCain VP thread for more information.
