Dad, having been with a deployed regiment in Nothern Ireland, Suspects that they staged that little patrol to kinda advertise the Army. He is a Comms officer. So the news report this morning showing him on a Battlefield phone and using a map would be a far more accurate representation.Rochey wrote:Out of curiosity, does anyone know exactly what he was doing over there? He's supposed to be a Recce Troop commander from what I gather. Ride around in his Scimitar/Scorpion (whichever they use now) and escort convoys, lend fire support to the infantry and hunt for the Taliban. Whether he's actually doing that is up for debate.

From what I gather, he spent most of his time as a forward air controller, (possibly with the Gurkhas) calling in air strikes and artillery on enemy forces from just behind the front lines. A pretty vital task on battlefields since WWII. He did at least one foot patrol (very possibly for propaganda purposes). He was in one firefight, when a five man Taliban patrol was spotted sneaking around the fire base where he was stationed. The troops opened fire, PH manning a 50. Cal. A skirmish of the most minor kind, but the Second Battle Of Rorke's Drift according to some of the press. In the last couple of weeks a household cavalry unit arrived out there, and PH was able to do the duty he originally trained for as an armoured recon troop leader.
We may not be talking Rambo, but he did serve on the front lines of an active combat zone.
