Hamas: Palestinians shouldn't think for themselves

Post by Mikey »

More specifically, Hamas decries a call for an election. Weird, since Fatah's popularity is likely at an all-time low follow the leak of three-year-old info that Fatah was willing to accept Israeli terms for peace that even Israel didn't hope to come true.

I guess groups like this, who claim to represent the interests of their people, in the final analysis are generally afraid to let those people decide for themselves.

I suppose. It just an excellent example of how the leadership in that area is completely and willfully contrary to the will of its constituents. I can only hope that the elections do proceed and that Abbas is shown some support - it would be a great message to Hamas by the Palestinian people.

Hamas is in power. The only thing an election could do to change things would be to kick them out. It's not really shocking they don't want one. Why risk it?

Because they are in an excellent position right now - with the discreditation of Fatah - to come out well in an election. That would mean a huge shot in the arm to their perceived legitimacy. With what's gone on lately in Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and more to follow, embracing a democratic process would be a huge PR score for Hamas.
