US Congressman Fears New Guam Naval Base Will Capsize Island

Post by Sionnach Glic »

Amazingly, this is perfectly serious.
Hank Johnson is a Democratic congressman from Georgia whose recent comments have erupted into ridicule and criticism. During a House Armed Services Committee Hearing, a Hank Johnson Guam tip over remark was made. Johnson noted that a marine build-up might cause a Guam capsize.

Johnson's remarks came as Admiral Robert Willard had been giving testimonial about building up more military along Guam. Johnson made the comment: "My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize." Willard responded back "We don't anticipate that." Willard added that they would add only 25,000 more into the Guam population so it shouldn't be an issue.

One of Hank Johnson's spokespeople noted that Congressman Johnson's remarks that Guam might capsize were made figuratively.

In the footage below you can see the conversation between Hank Johnson and Admiral Willard regarding Guam's size. See the video of Hank Johnson Guam tip over remarks below in the YouTube clip.
Video proof!

I think the worst part of this is that people actually needed a spokesman to clarify the fact that the remarks were figurative.

I don't know if that's what the Congressman felt, because next he begins talking about the environment. So maybe he was actually being serious? To me it seems like he was.

None. They always surrender right before they finish the job and never tell you why.

Yeah, he didn't sound like he was joking, that was a little scary that our congressmen may be just that stupid... :bangwall:

Couldn't be. The congessman is still alive; and to be stupid enough to truly believe that one could capsize an island, he'd also have to be stupid enough to forget how to breathe.

I've heard someone came out to make an official statement that the guy really meant it in a figurative sense. Were it anyone else, I'd just assume he was indeed talking figuratively and just phrased it poorly. But the fact that a) he sounds like an utter idiot and b) he openly said "tip over and capsize" while making a hand gesture to demonstrate just that.....yeah, I don't buy it. It seems much more like he made an idiotic remark and that his spokespeople are now engaging in damage control by going on about what he "really" meant. I'm not quite sure how "tip over and capsize" can be used to phrase economic concerns.

Well, you know, having millions of dollars a year flowing into an area is a bad thing right?

If he were worried about someone turning the wheel and displacing the island in space-time, I think he'd have a more credible concern.
