She's also the person who stood up to Galtieri and Scargill.

Re: Ted Kennedy dies
Actually she knew about the problem with Galtieri before anything happened. She could have easily have stopped it by putting a complaint into his government weeks before. The warning would have stopped the invasion before it even happened. Would have saved a lot of lives on both sides. She decided that the action would do her well in the polls and low and behold it did, she won an election on the back of it. Don't try and tell me it was a good thing.Captain Seafort wrote:She's also the person who stood up to Galtieri and Scargill.
As for the mines that was another thing she engineered. Sure Scargill was a prat and she played him as such, however, she was closing mines that where perfectly viable. Just because she wanted a fight with the unions. She picked the correct one and won. We're now pretty much dependent upon Russian gas for our power generating capability. We could still be fairly self sufficient for that and the prices would be much less. I'm not saying that everything the unions did in the 70's - 80's was good. Our family quite disastrously because of dad's involvement with them (which was very minor but we suffered for it, details if you insist). However, the needle has swung too far in the other direction due to her actions (and as I say the prat was also to blame).
It's also worth pointing out that the current economic situation is basically a direct outcome of the policies of her and Reagan. The stuff that has recently gone on is due to the types of policy she introduced and the people who thought she was good and followed her example. That includes the likes of Gordon Brown.

Yeah, Joe was the Kingpin.Captain Seafort wrote:Depends how you define "the Kennedy thugs". If you're just talking about his various siblings I don't know enough to argue. If you're including his father then Ted was a saint by comparison.
Are you talking about William Kennedy Smith?Mikey wrote:Yeah, I'd put Papa Joe above him, as well as the grandson (I forgot which is which) who was tried fro rape...
And wasn't there another who beat a young girl with golf club and was found guilty many years later?

Re: Ted Kennedy dies
While I do consider Ted a murderer too, I think as a whole Ted Kennedy did a lot to help average people. Does it make up for killing someone? Well honestly if health care passes because of his death then I would say yes. I figure failure to pass health care means millions of people dying or going bankrupt so yes, Ted could make up for the murder in his own death.

I believe that people can redeem themselves in their future actions, but that same courtesy should either be extended to everyone who "makes a mistake" or no one at all.Monroe wrote:While I do consider Ted a murderer too, I think as a whole Ted Kennedy did a lot to help average people. Kennedy's Secret Soviet Overture Against Reagan
Saturday, August 29, 2009 5:10 PM
President Ronald Reagan and Sen. Ted Kennedy were good friends, according to Nancy Reagan. But that didn't stop Kennedy from trying to undercut Reagan ... with a little help from the Soviet Union.
According to Peter Robinson, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and a former White House speechwriter, Kennedy offered to make a deal with then-Soviet leader Yuri Andropov in 1983.
Robinson, writing for Forbes.com, says Kennedy sent his close friend, former California state Sen. John Tunney, to Moscow with a secret message to Andropov: Help the Democrats battle Reagan in the 1984 presidential election, and in return Kennedy would help Andropov in dealing with Reagan.
Robinson recounts that Victor Chebrikov, a top KGB official, recorded the details of Kennedy's offer in a memo that was uncovered in Soviet archives in 1991.
Kennedy promised to:
Visit Moscow and prep the Soviets on effective propaganda. "The main purpose of the meeting, according to the senator, would be to arm Soviet officials with explanations regarding problems of nuclear disarmament so they may be better prepared and more convincing during appearances in the USA," states the Soviet memo.
Help Andropov get on U.S. television. "A direct appeal ... to the American people will, without a doubt, attract a great deal of attention and interest in the country," states the memo. "If the proposal is recognized as worthy, then Kennedy and his friends will bring about suitable steps to have representatives of the largest television companies in the USA contact Y.V. Andropov for an invitation to Moscow for the interviews. ... The senator underlined the importance that this initiative should be seen as coming from the American side."
According to the memo, Kennedy also had told Tunney that he planned to run for president in 1988.
Robinson writes that there is no evidence to prove that Andropov, who died eight months later, ever took any action regarding Kennedy's offer.
