The Astrovore used an umbilical to drill into other ships, tap into their power systems, computer network, fuel storage to drain their power and reserves. Here we see the umbilical inside the USS Enterprise. [1]

Captain Pike and La'An used Baryon particles to mix in with the deuterium stream in the umbilical in order to force it to detach, or risk contaminating their entire fuel supply. [1]
