A neural amplifier is a device used to boost the mental capacity of the subject. It was used in 2261 to boost Spock's inherent telepathic abilities in an attempt to talk to the Jikaru. Unfortunately, the power of the Jikaru's mind caused Spock to overload is abilities causing temporary damage. [1]

Later Uhura used the device to successfully communicate with the Jikaru and learn that it was a sentient being and in pain from the experiments the Lutani had been performing on her. The Jikaru expressed a wish to die, which Captain Pike agreed to. The Jikaru to flew into the systems star, rather than continuing to be used as a weapon. [1]
