In 2261 a joint Federation / M'Kroon investigation into the archeology of Vadia IX reviled a hidden high tech building. Investigations later revealed it to be a dimensional prison to hold the Vezda, a non-corporal life-form described as pure evil. During the encounter one of the team was possessed by a Vezda leading to their death. [1]

The entrance system for the Dimensional Prison requires a blood sacrifice. It sounds dramatic, however, in practice it turned out to be a needle prick to the finger and a drop of blood in a hopper. Once supplied the candidate is scanned and, if accepted, the door opens. Other people are able to enter with the applicant. Any attempt to leave without them is met with disintegration. [1]

The Beholder

The Beholder, sentry of eternal bridges, is the guardian of the Well of Orbs. It is filled with a light that the darkness of the Vezda cannot extinguish. [1]

Escape Attempt

In 2261 a single Vezda escaped the Well of Orbs and killed a member of the USS Enterprise crew, Dana Gamble. In doing so it took procession of his body and killed two other members of the crew. Pelia eventually shot the Vezda and Scotty captured the released creature and trapped it in the pattern buffer. [1]

Later that year the Enterprise visited the planet Skygowen. There they discovered that the Vazda, thought to be dead, was actually still alive and had escaped the pattern buffer transmitting himself to Skygowen. There he took the name Zeperez and led the locals into worshiping the Vezda. [2]

Once reunited with Doctor M'Benga he was able to open a gateway to the planet Vadia IX, home of the Vezda dimentional prison. Once there he destroyed The Beholder and freed his fellow Vezda. [2]

Using a mind meld James T. Kirk and Spock used the phasers of the USS Enterprise and USS Farragut, operating in synchronicity, to power the gateway and allowed Pike and Batel to travel through to Vadia IX. [2]

Marie Batel used her powers to create a fictional reality in which she and Christopher Pike lived a full and long life together. Boosted by the love experienced she was able to use that power to overcome the Vezda and return them to the Well of Orbs. Killing Zeperez and returning him to the Well along with the rest of the Vezda. She then transformed into The Beholder and took her place guarding the Well. [2]
