An officer on the USS Equinox, Yates was stranded in the Delta quadrant some time before Voyager was. The ship experienced considerable difficulties during his attempts to reach Earth, compounded by the fact that it was a small and relatively weak science vessel. The crew eventually resorted to murdering alien beings after he discovered that a substance in their bodies could boost the performance of warp drive. Yates was killed by the aliens before they came across the USS Voyager. [1]
