As a cadet Froman was in the "crew" of the ship captained by James T. Kirk when he rescued the crew and passengers of the Kobayashi Maru in a simulation built by Spock. He was later posted on the bridge of the USS Enterprise during the rescue mission to Vulcan when it broadcast a planetary distress call. [2]

Later as an Ensign he served as weapons officer on the USS Enterprise under Kirk. He was present in the bridge when it was attacked by the USS Vengeance. He was one of the many officers who refused to leave their post when it appeared that the Enterprise would crash into San Francisco. Instead staying and attempting to avert disaster. [1]

Froman was still serving as an auxilliary officer during the USS Enterprise's first five year mission. [3]
