This Is The Westboro Baptist Church’s Bizarro Reason For Protesting In Austin This Weekend

The Westboro Baptist Church are the sensible folks best known for their controversial and basically hateful treatment of the homosexual community, dead soldiers, Jewish institutions, and we assume sunlight and happiness.

And now we can add Formula One racing to that list.

Fred Phelps, the leader of the small and crazy Kansas-based church, is going to be in Austin for the Formula One race to protest it. According to the church's diplomatically named website, godhatesfags.com, this is why they are protesting the race:

WBC will picket Formula 1 racing at The Circuit of The Americas in Austin, TX to remind this nation that God hates the vwicked people of this land of vain idolaters and that they shall be turned into Hell. These sporting events resemble the patriotic worship-the-flag pep rallies masquerading as sodlier's funerals in that this Bible-ignorant fools worship these race car drivers like they are little gods! Shame on these people for worshipping these athletes instead of following the plain commandments of their God. They ought to obey today before it is too late. WBC knows they will not, never the less, we will kindly warn them to flee the wrath to come. These are the last days of all, Doomed america. Wake up before you find yourselves cast into the deep pit of endless fire!

It seems like God told Phelps that he hates KERS, DRS, and Kimi Raikkonen and it was time to take action.

The best way to protest these folks is to not give them any attention... Or to make out with an F1 driver right in front of them. That'll shut them up, hopefully. CALL ME KIMI!

I'm increasingly of the opinion that those people don't believe one word of what they say and the whole thing is just a sham to get publicity. I read once that there are several lawyers in the family and outside of donations their main source of income is suing people who attack them. Sounds like a scam to me.

I don't think. Austin is apparently counter-petitioning Texas' petition. That would make the Texans the separatists I believe.

Don't forget that there are six other states (Louisiana, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee) doing the same thing. Instead of derision shouldn't the response be "when so many people are complaining we should really pay attention to their complaints"? It is indeed far easier to do something idiotic, like call them "sore losers" or "country bumpkins", rather than try to address their problems.
