Mass shooting at Dark Knight Rises

Post by Graham Kennedy »

Source
At least 12 people have been killed and dozens wounded in a shooting at a midnight cinema showing of the new Batman film near Denver, Colorado.

Witnesses said a man wearing a gas mask opened fire after tossing a tear gas canister in the auditorium as movie-goers watched The Dark Knight Rises.

A 24-year-old former medical student was arrested in a car park nearby. He had a rifle, handgun and knife.

Another gun was recovered from the theatre, in the city of Aurora.

Police revised down the death toll from 14 earlier. They said about 50 people had been shot, including the deceased.
Awww, crap. :(

I just cannot wrap my head round how a person could do this. No matter how pissed off he is, no matter what he's angry at... these people aren't the ones that did it to him. One of the dead was a three month old baby, for fucks sake.
Give a man a fire, and you keep him warm for a day. SET a man on fire, and you will keep him warm for the rest of his life...

He's deranged. Nothing to wrap your head around. You're normal, so naturally you could never think of a reason to do something like this.

The three month old survived IIRC. One source I read reported that the gunman told the police that he was the real joker when he was arrested.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Of course in a tragedy such as this we instinctively look for reasons, but what do you hope to find, GK? You may as well attempt to find out the dialect David Berkowitz' dog used when he told him to kill, or deduce how shooting Reagan would help Hinckley score with Jodie Foster.

As an aside, what was a three-month-old doing at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises?

No idea, really. I'll be intrigued to hear what he comes out with. If his "I'm the Joker" line was real then I guess it's just that he got lost in the idea of villains being this uber-cool glamorous type.

I suppose anything is reason enough if you're crazy. I remember a case where a girl turned up in her school with a gun one day and shot the place up. When the cops asked her why she did it she shrugged and said "I don't like Mondays."

A very famous case in its time... IIRC it was in San Diego in the late 60's, and inspired the famous Bob Geldof song.

I thought the same thing myself.

Somebody who couldn't get a babysitter at midnight, I suppose.

Does the US have a rating system like the UK one? Here the film is rated 12A, so a kid could get in if an adult (over 18) was with them. How does it work there?

Then sit your ass home and see the movie a different night.
