USS Iowa Finds A Home

...In my hometown.

Pretty cool; I'll have to see her if I ever make it back to L.A.

Nice. I have to say that standing on the deck of the Mighty Mo right where the Japanese surrender was signed was impressive... not to mention all the more mundane impressive stuff aboard a battleship.

New Jersey was impressive. I was impressed with how thick the turret armor is. It's one thing to know it's x inches thick but another to actually see it.

Now try imagining armour half as thick again.

I don't know what you mean. Iowa is a sistership to the New Jersey and the turret armor is the thickest?

That's what the armour was like on the Yamato.

Oh ok. I always disliked in general WW2 Japanese warship designs (appearences) but the Yamato has that look of power. I also like the Nagato class battleship too. One of the top two pre-WW2 battleships.

There is a piece of the Yamato class turret face armor 26" thick sitting at US Naval Proving Ground, Dahlgren, Virginia. Pretty impressive.

The top one in my opinion - they were never battle-tested as the QEs were, but their protection was roughly equivalent and they were faster and more heavily armed.

I find the Nagato rather pretty as well.

I quite like the pagodas; I know its horrifically impractical in terms of warfare but I just like the pointlessness of it.

They're ugly - they rob the Japanese refits of the elegance of the old tripods without the robust purposefulness of the RN's tower bridges.

I agree. The Colorados have heavier protection but slower speed. The Nelsons have the heaviest armor though their armor belt was abit shallow, but their triple turrets were for a time quirky. The Nagatos had impressive speed for it's time and as refitted perhaps could have fought one of the treaty battleships on nearly even terms.

The Nagatos pagoda tower wasn't nearly as bad as others IMO.

Hmm, good reason to make it out to California, well besides seeing family. ;)
