MEXICO CITY - Authorities in Mexico say a newborn baby girl declared dead by doctors revived inside her coffin during her wake.
Hidalgo state Attorney General Jose Rodriguez says the parents heard a strange noise coming from the tiny casket. Opening it up, they found her crying and very much alive.
Rodriguez told state public radio Thursday that the doctor who pronounced the girl dead at a hospital in the town of Tulancingo is being investigated for possible negligence.
The baby, who was born prematurely Monday, is in stable condition at a different hospital.

Possible negligence? He declared a kid dead who wasn't!

True, they might get a nice lawsuit out of this... well, in the US at least. No idea on Mexico's civil courts.

Yes, the article said "possible" negligence. Then again it also said (my emphasis) -Tyyr wrote:Possible negligence? He declared a kid dead who wasn't!
I think if you've stipulated the first part, you can pretty much assume the second.they found her crying AND very much alive.
But hey, I'm not all that familiar with Christian funeral practices. Isn't that why they call it a "wake?"

I'm impressed they missed this... Normally they check for a pulse or breathing or something.

That doctor should keep an eye out in case any relatives decide to have a few words with him.

Hell, he should be careful they don't stuff him in the coffin and bury him... without a 'wake'. ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Seriously, isn't there a period between declared to be dead and putting the corpse in the coffin?

Okay, first off, do they not embalm people in Mexico? And second, did that guy get his MD license out of a Cracker Jack box? If that were my child, I would make sure he would NEVER make such a mistake again. A blowtorch and a pair of pliers might be required...

Cinco de Mayo is not the day of the dead... Day of the Dead is the day before what we know as Halloween.

OK, my Spanish is off too. It's properly Dia de los Muertos, and you're all wrong about the date. It is traditionally celebrated on November 2nd, to follow All Saints' Day and coincide with All Souls' Day. It is a day to venerate, propitiate, and celebrate dead ancestors; and like santeria or modern voudun it is inextricably mixed with Catholic ideas.
