SourceA father-of-two hanged himself live over the internet in Britain's first 'cyber suicide'.
Kevin Whitrick, 42, took his life after being goaded by dozens of chatroom users from across the world who initially believed he was play acting. But as they watched in horror, Mr Whitrick climbed onto a chair, smashed through a ceiling and then hanged himself with a piece of rope.
Kevin Neil Whitrick, 42, was found dead by police in Wellington, after being alerted by a web user who is thought to have watched in horror as the man harmed himself. Stunned by what they had witnessed - broadcast on a popular chatroom website used by millions of people across the globe - chatroom users immediately contacted the police. Officers rushed to the electrician's home in the Wellington area of Shropshire within minutes, smashing down the door to try to save him.

Man kills himself on the net after being urged on
Give a man a fire, and you keep him warm for a day. SET a man on fire, and you will keep him warm for the rest of his life...

Damn
That's incredibly sad. I hope that people realize that suicide is nothing to joke about no matter how un-serious you think the person may be.![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif)

Clearly anyone surprised by this hasn't heard of the "Do it Faggot" meme

Also I think a factor in a lot of suicides is the desire for attention, perhaps to become an hero, so the net can either make their wishes come true and/or be a dangerous enabler.
Reading the article it sounds like he was in some sort of "insult chat room" that he'd been to before, so I'm guessing things played out just like he planned.

Not the first instance I've heard of this happening, unfortunately.
"You've all been selected for this mission because you each have a special skill. Professor Hawking, John Leslie, Phil Neville, the Wu-Tang Clan, Usher, the Sugar Puffs Monster and Daniel Day-Lewis! Welcome to Operation MindFuck!"
