Wednesday was, of course, St. Patrick's Day; and as you may know, it's a big deal of a celebration of Irish-American ancestry over here, even if it's hardly noted over there. Well, So far this week, I've heard the song "Goodbye to the English" twenty times if I've heard it once.

PS - I don't know the state song of Maryland... I'm just taking that factoid from the article I referenced.

They already had regiments, and they kept their skirts. Ironically, the brunt of the fighting at Culloden was borne by 2nd Bn Royal Scots.

I'm sorry, I should have said "contribute regiments to the British Army." When they were formed up to be part of the British Army, weren't they required to ditch the kilts in favor of trews? (The Highlanders anyway; the Lowlanders probably wouldn't be caught dead in something that uncouth anyway.)

That's what I'm talking about. While the regiments tended to recruit across the the entire country, they were nominally divided into Highland and Lowland regiments. The Lowland regiments wore trousers, while the Highland regiments wore kilts. The Royal Scots were a Lowland regiment. Also First of Foot, Right of the Line, and Pontius Pilate's bodyguard.
