Mass Effect's signature cool ship, first captain by Captain Anderson and then passed to command of the first human Spectre, Commander Shepard, the 100 meter long SSV Normandy is the fastest ship in the Alliance Fleet, as well as the stealthiest. Built in a joint effort between the Human Alliance and their old enemies, the Turians, in its first shakedown cruise to Eden Prime, it encountered Geth Vessels as well as a strange, massive new ship commanded by the rogue Turian Spectre Saren, which would later be discovered to be a Reaper called Sovereign.

Piloted by Joker, it is the finest vessel in known space.

Thoughts?

Great ship, hadn't reckoned on it being 100 metres long though, would have said 50 max.

Well it's larger inside then outside IIRC going by the game.

As a hero ship she's fine but from what I've read she's far from the finest ship in the galaxy. However her overall design seems sound and the idea of them working in groups is just a part of their plan.

Though I'm not to sure what else can be added about her.

Its a relatively slender ship. You need it to be big to get much usable volume out of it.

Shes a stealth ship. A frigate. A small scout ship. Stealth technology works on thermals. Huge sinks in the hull store heat, and make the ship invisible to conventional sensors that operate via thermal emissions. She was never meant to be a battleship, but as a stealth vessel she does her job well givven the universe's set up.

Like I said, she fits her role really well. Light, fast and silent. In groups this class can cause harm to cruiser ranked ships. Which is nice since she's a stealth ship. Hide on an enemy patrol path and the ambush the enemy cruiser.

Well with the release of Mass Effect 2 at the end of the month we should find out a bit more about it.

Sadly no.
The Normandy gets destroyed and is replaced with a new, larger ship with the same basic design and also called Normandy

I've been trying to stay away from info on the new game to try have some surprises for me (thanks for spoilering that). I've been looking forward to the sequel since I finished the original. Its out here on Fri 29th Jan so I'm planning on getting away from work as early as possible and basically becoming a hermit till monday. I'm secretly hoping I don't finish it in that time though.

Looks like two decent ship designs welded together.

To create what? A bad ship? Or an awesome one?

A crap one.

But looking again, I think those engine-things on the side are on the other side too, just hidden by the hull at that angle. If it's symmetric, it would be back to being a pretty cool design.

They are, she is a symmetrical design. Designed to operate in atmosphere, hence the wings.

This image displays her form a little better:
