Star Trek favourite Patrick Stewart is to be knighted in the New Year's Honours list.
The screen and stage legend will receive the gong from the Queen for his services to drama.
Stewart's award will cap an incredible career that has spanned 50 years of film and theatre.
Palace sources said the Queen is a huge fan of the 69-year-old, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
One observer said: "It's a fantastic accolade for a fantastic actor.
"He is a man at the very top of his trade who has mastered both popular TV and classic roles."

Stewart, a die-hard Labourite, is seen as an inspiration to millions as he fought his way up from tough childhood to the top of the acting profession.
He was born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, the son of a weaver and an army sergeant major.
His father beat his mother and he admitted this had a huge impact on him when he was growing up.
Stewart left school at 15 to become a reporter.
But he spent so much time at rehearsals with a local drama group that his editor told him to choose between acting and journalism.
He picked the stage and worked his way through the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
Directors feared his baldness could cost him parts. But he wore a toupee for auditions and promise "two actors for the price of one".
Excellent. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Good deal. As far as I know him he's a good guy off stage as well as on.
Kinda makes me wish we'd come up with something like that on this side of the pond. I mean we have all sorts of awards and stuff, but those just don't have the same flavor.

Meh, you can buy one. There's a kindergarten teacher in my wife's school named "Dame Johnnie Walker." She bought a peerage.
She also has red hair, so the "Johnnie Walker Red" jokes fly.
