Sort of a bittersweet story, don't you think? :)
One half of Britain's longest married couple has died.

Frank Milford, who was married to Anita for 81 years, died at midday yesterday at the Warwick Park Nursing Home in Plymouth.

The couple, both 101 years old, met at a YMCA dance and got wed at Torpoint Register Office in Cornwall on May 26, 1928.

A spokeswoman for Mr Milford's nursing home said he died peacefully with his wife at his side.

The Milfords lived in Plymouth throughout the Blitz during the Second World War and they twice had lucky escapes.

The couple have two children, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

I don't know if I could handle a young thing like that.

I have to say, I love hearing about these kinds of things, not that he died, but that they stuck it out for 81 years, that's pretty impressive compared to what marriages usually last for.

That's cause it's just too easy to get divorced now days. Plus the older generations were taught to stick it out and make it work, nowdays it's like everything else: don't like it, toss it and get something else.

My grandparents went 61 years before one of them passed. :D

Yes Panzer, that's basically it, sadly people refuse to compromise, it's quite sad, in fact, instead of expecting to compromise, they write up a pre-nup, which basically ensures a divorce will happen.

A side-effect of the ease of divorce is the relative convenience of marriage in many people's eyes. A lot of folks of my generation and younger seem to take the idea of marriage very lightly, because it's seen as such an easily-reversible process.

There's the ticket. It's why I'd never get into a relationship I'd feel obligated to stay in even if I was miserable.

Considering my sexual preferences, I imagine I shall probably stay away from civil partnerships unless I am as sure as I can possibly be. And i will like to have lived with them for a a couple of years before taking that step. I want to make sure its an absolutel commitment.

That's an excellent attitude to take. The last thing you want to do is rush into something like that.

Yep. I met my wife 8 years before we were married. Now, I just have until I die, and we'll be buried separately. I said "until death do us part," but I'm free after that.

Just kiddin'.

Take my Worf, please!

I know what you're saying. I hope I pop off before my wife. Then I'll have a bit of peace and quiet for the duration between me going and when she shuffles off :)
