MS Outlook Issue

So, I am having a problem with my Microsoft Outlook email program( the full Outlook, not Outlook Express): It refuses to send emails. I have had a test email sitting in my outbox for 2 days now, refusing to send. Any ideas on how to fix it? I can receive emails fine.

Just a thought, maybe you have a bad server address for the sent mail. IDK how to check that, I believe it is in settings somewhere, you should check that and see if it is missing the http:// or a backslash somewhere, that's the only thing I can think of as being the problem.

I'd would suggest that as well, theres usually 2 different servers, one for sending one for recieving. It sounds like you may have put the incorrent settings in. Also, theres a check box where you have to mark wether or not the outgoing server requires authorisation - most of the time you have to select it, and tell it to use the same settings as the incoming mail server.
Are you using an exchange Email account? If not who is your email account with, and is it set up for IMAP or POP.

Actually it's most likely the outgoing mail server settings. They almost always work over SMTP (and never over POP or IMAP, which are incoming mail protocols). Often mail server names are smtp.somedomain.com but sometimes it's post.somedomain.com. Have you changed this setting recently? If not, and it's worked before, then it's most likely that you've got the server name correct, but they've turned on some soft of security setting. For example they may now be requiring you to login to the SMTP server to send messages. Check out the ISP website and see what it's got to say about it.

How do you mean? Outlook is part of every Office release going all the way back to when men lived in caves and had computers made out of stones and sticks and things

Maybe it was just Outlook Express then.

Alas, I have not. I went to the "Residential Network" people and all the server information is correct so at some point I need to stop in the IT department at the admin building and talk to them. Everyone is having issues w/ their email. The school email is based on outlook.com but people are having difficulty logging on. And I hate the webmail set up, so I just keep using my Outlook, which doesn't send, so I have to send from my webmail. It's a vicious cycle...

Has it ever worked? If so, ask if anyone's been fiddling with the firewall recently. If not, it sounds likely to be the exact issue that Ian pointed out. Can one of the network guys give you the exact SMTP server name settings (usually along the lines of: smtp.googlemail.com or smtp.yahoo.com)? Make sure you've got the correct port and authentication settings too.
What happens if you setup a bog standard internet email address account in your Outlook (if that's allowed on your network and the POP/IMAP and SMTP ports haven't been blocked on the firewall??)

I am using a bog-standard email address, my one from home. For either address, Outlook "cannot connect to outgoing SMTP Mail server" (or something like that). I understand the mail worked last year, this year they switched to a new system...

If it's something you feel you can do, maybe this will help:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/153119
(if your network is setup like this of course!)

Sorry, strike that, I didn't read your post properly. It's not a client/Exchange server setup is it. You're simply using Outlook to connect to your ISP email account over the internet. That being said, if you set yourself up a free, for example, Googlemail account and add that to your Outlook, does that send email?

I have my free school mail linked to my Outlook program (it's a hotmail-type deal) and no, it doesn't.

And you say it affects everyone and not just you? One last question (if you can be bothered)...
If you were to download, install and configure another email client like
'Thunderbird' does that work? If not, I'd say it's seriously time to talk to the gatekeepers
