Drunken cop gets no time for beating woman

Another feel-good story from the AP:
CHICAGO (AP) - An off-duty Chicago police officer convicted of pummeling a female bartender half his size was sentenced Tuesday to two years probation and anger management classes for the videotaped attack that appeared worldwide on the Internet and cable news channels.
Cook County Circuit Judge John Fleming also gave Anthony Abbate a home curfew of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and ordered him to perform 130 hours of community service.
And the WTF money quote from the judge:
Prosecutors had asked for prison for Abbate - he could have been sentenced to up to five years behind bars - but the judge said he didn't see aggravating factors to justify a prison term.
"If I believed sentencing Anthony Abbate to prison would stop people from getting drunk and hitting people, I'd give him the maximum sentence," Fleming said.

Not sure what being a cop has to do with it, he was off duty but basic assault doesn't get you jail time here either for the first offence.

well, as a cop, he should be a bit more controlled and act more as a model of suitable behavior.....
....but just like with the guys that make the law, they don't seem to think they have to follow it.

Cops get a worst punishment than eveyone else? That hardly seems fair.

It said he could have gotten 5 years. Letting him off will give the wrong impression to a lot of people.
And given that these people are supposed to be unpstanding pillars of the community whose job it is to protect the public, I see nothing wrong with slapping one of them a little harder if he does something like this. They of all people should know better.

First offence. You want to throw him into a already over loaded prison system, where being a cop will most likely get him killed?
He got probabtion, community servive and anger management classes.

Eh, she probably had it coming.
Seriously though, he shouldn't have gotten off completely. At least slap him with a fine or something.

He got community service, which I think is more valuable than a fine. Especially since he's a cop and ont exactly rolling in it...

I hope he's still not a cop. He should have been fired for that.
