Chinese Vessels "Harass" US Warship

Chinese ships 'harass' US vessel

Five Chinese ships have manoeuvred dangerously close to a US navy vessel in the South China Sea, the US government has said.

US officials said the incident came after days of "increasingly aggressive" acts by Chinese ships.

These violated international law on respecting other users of the seas, a Pentagon spokesman said.

A protest was expected to be delivered to the Chinese military attache at the Pentagon on Monday.

The incident happened on Sunday as the USNS Impeccable was on routine operations in international waters 75 miles (120km) south of Hainan island, a US statement said.

The ships had "aggressively manoeuvred" around the Impeccable "in an apparent co-ordinated effort to harass the US ocean surveillance ship while it was conducting routine operations in international waters", according to the Pentagon.

Emergency stop

The US ship sprayed one Chinese vessel with water from fire hoses to try to force it away, it said.

But it said the Chinese crew stripped to their underwear and carried on approaching to within 25ft (8m).

The Pentagon identified the Chinese boats as a navy intelligence ship and four other vessels.

When the Impeccable radioed requesting a safe path to leave the area, two Chinese vessels dropped pieces of wood in its path, forcing the US ship to make an emergency stop, the Pentagon said.

"The unprofessional manoeuvres by Chinese vessels violated the requirement under international law to operate with due regard for the rights and safety of other lawful users of the ocean," said Pentagon spokesman Marine Maj Stewart Upton.

"We expect Chinese ships to act responsibly and refrain from provocative activities that could lead to miscalculation or a collision at sea," he said.

No immediate response from the Chinese government was reported.

Okay, this is strange. Just what possessed 5 Chinese vessels to all start fucking with a USN ship all at once? What was going on? Was the US ship getting close to something the Chinese wanted to keep secret, perhaps?

That seems more probable than, "they were all drunk", which is the other explanation that makes sense.

Am I the only one reminded of the Chinese fighter pilot who collided with a US Navy EP-3 a few years back? Wasn't that in the same area?

No idea. If it is, though, then that's pretty damn interesting. Maybe the US should send a couple of subs to go check the area out?

We could always see if they'd like to harass a carrier group...

I think they'd rather sandpaper a tiger's ass than do that. It would be a very, very big mistake.

Finally, an appropriate time to use my demotivational poster.

Yeah, notice how they were harassing a support vessel with no way of defending itself? It's just a training exercise for them anyways and a way of telling the Yanks that they can and will push the envelope, still any meaningful USN vessel (DDG or above) would eat them from breakfast.

A buddy of mine at work who retired from the Navy flying F-14s has told me a few humorous stories of them screwing with the Russians. Makes me appreciate their sacrifices and thankful for folks like that. :US:

Yeah, that is something that every country seems to do at some point or another, but closing to 25 feet? At that distance, the chimp from my other thread could hit them with rocks!

That's nothing - during the Cold War the Russians used to send destroyers even closer to British and US carriers. Somewhat predictably, eventually someone got his plot wrong, with the result that the Ark very nearly drove over a Kotlin class destroyer. Fortunately there wasn't much damage on either side, but the Kotlin lost seven men overboard, only five of whom were recovered.

Ok, thats just stupid. Did they know it wasn't going to blow them out of the water, or just guessing?

They had to be either drunk, bored, or both.

Well, at least those men died for a good reason. Oh, wait...

I think this line kind of explains stuff, I can't imagine this being a typical chinese navy technique to demoralise the enemy :)

If they stripped out of their underwear, it would likely raise morale.
