A Bit Too Close For My Taste

Post by Tsukiyumi »

Talk about a near miss!

A 200-foot wide asteroid zoomed past Earth today at an altitude of 40,000 miles - swerving far enough from our planet to avoid total destruction, officials said.

Dubbed 2009 DD45, the large rock was discovered only Friday by Australian astronomers.

The enormous asteroid narrowly avoided a collision with Earth at 8:44 EST, officials said.

Although 40,000 miles sounds like a safe distance, it's only about one-seventh of the way to the moon and less than twice as far out as most satellites, astronomers said.

Had 2009 DD45 slammed down onto the Earth, it would have exploded with the force of a large nuclear blast somewhere in the Pacific Ocean west of Tahiti.

Astronomers said the asteroid is likely to return for another series of near misses since it's somehow drawn in by our planet's gravity.

Peter Brown, an astronomer at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, said the last rock "as large or larger than this to come this close was in 1973 and the next time will be in 2029 when Apophis makes its close approach."

Apophis initially caused some concern among scientists when its plotted course revealed it to be on a collision trajectory with Earth, but further investigations have since shown it will pass harmlessly by.

Okay, that's uncomfortable. We spotted it on Friday? :?

We need more budget for detecting and possibly redirecting these things. If this fucker had hit, it would've caused billions in immediate damage, and seriously screwed up our climate for years.

I'm curious as to how large of a blast.

I'll see if I can find another article, but the news story I was watching (which brought this to my attention) said "several thousand times larger than the Hiroshima blast." which would be several gigatons, I believe. :worried:

Interesting. That would be 15.5 gigatons. :worried:

Here is what I got when I used the default values on the site, cause the article is less than helpful. I chose 100km from impact and an iron asteroid.
Your Inputs:
Distance from Impact: 100.00 km = 62.10 miles
Projectile Diameter: 200.00 m = 656.00 ft = 0.12 miles
Projectile Density: 8000 kg/m3
Impact Velocity: 17.00 km/s = 10.56 miles/s
Impact Angle: 45 degrees
Target Density: 2500 kg/m3
Target Type: Sedimentary Rock

Energy:
Energy before atmospheric entry: 4.84 x 1018 Joules = 1.16 x 103 MegaTons TNT
The average interval between impacts of this size somewhere on Earth during the last 4 billion years is 2.5 x 104years

Atmospheric Entry:
The projectile begins to breakup at an altitude of 14200 meters = 46500 ft
The projectile reaches the ground in a broken condition. The mass of projectile strikes the surface at velocity 16.8 km/s = 10.4 miles/s
The impact energy is 4.70 x 1018 Joules = 1.12 x 103MegaTons.
The broken projectile fragments strike the ground in an ellipse of dimension 0.41 km by 0.29 km

Major Global Changes:
The Earth is not strongly disturbed by the impact and loses negligible mass.
The impact does not make a noticeable change in the Earth's rotation period or the tilt of its axis.
The impact does not shift the Earth's orbit noticeably.

Crater Dimensions:
What does this mean?

Crater shape is normal in spite of atmospheric crushing; fragments are not significantly dispersed.

Transient Crater Diameter: 4.15 km = 2.58 miles
Transient Crater Depth: 1.47 km = 0.912 miles

Final Crater Diameter: 5.03 km = 3.12 miles
Final Crater Depth: 0.481 km = 0.299 miles

The crater formed is a complex crater.
The volume of the target melted or vaporized is 0.0296 km3 = 0.0071 miles3
Roughly half the melt remains in the crater , where its average thickness is 2.18 meters = 7.16 feet

Thermal Radiation:
What does this mean?

Time for maximum radiation: 0.2 seconds after impact

Visible fireball radius: 2.57 km = 1.59 miles
The fireball appears 5.83 times larger than the sun
Thermal Exposure: 1.58 x 105 Joules/m2
Duration of Irradiation: 43.5 seconds
Radiant flux (relative to the sun): 3.63

Seismic Effects:
What does this mean?

The major seismic shaking will arrive at approximately 20 seconds.
Richter Scale Magnitude: 6.6
Mercalli Scale Intensity at a distance of 100 km:

IV. Felt indoors by many, outdoors by few during the day. At night, some awakened. Dishes, windows, doors disturbed; walls make cracking sound. Sensation like heavy truck striking building. Standing motor cars rocked noticeably.

V. Felt by nearly everyone; many awakened. Some dishes, windows broken. Unstable objects overturned. Pendulum clocks may stop.

Ejecta:
What does this mean?

The ejecta will arrive approximately 144 seconds after the impact.
At your position the ejecta arrives in scattered fragments
Average Ejecta Thickness: 2.66 mm = 0.105 inches
Mean Fragment Diameter: 3.11 cm = 1.22 inches

Air Blast:
What does this mean?

The air blast will arrive at approximately 303 seconds.
Peak Overpressure: 9220 Pa = 0.0922 bars = 1.31 psi
Max wind velocity: 20.9 m/s = 46.8 mph
Sound Intensity: 79 dB (Loud as heavy traffic)
Damage Description:

Glass windows will shatter.

From what I heard it would have done something similar to that asteroid that exploded above Siberea in 1907.
What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

So pretty much whatever country it landed on would have been fucked. Nice to know.

I'm not that smart, but I think I could've deduced that outcome without the complex calculations.

Nah, you'd be fine. Go camping in the mountains for a few days. When you get back you'll have plenty of parking space.

Sure, some puny little 200 foot asteroid certainly can't approach the force of Deep slamming his fist on the table!

You put in 200 METRES, but the asteroid was 200 FEET according to the OP. So the impact energy should be 35 times smaller than you calculated.
