My home state has just legalized spanking in public schools. What do you guys think on spanking children? I was never spanked growing up. Spent my hours in my room or in the corner. I think the whole idea is kind of weird.

They legalised spanking in the school, as in administered by the staff? Hmm...much lawsuits I forsee.

My take? I don't spank, I did it when the kids were very young and it just makes them act out more. Kids crave attention, any attention and if they figure acting bad will get them some, they'll do it. Besides I couldn't stand the look they gave me.

I'll share some anecdotal evidence though (the best kind barring anything else!). Every kid I have met that was/is spanked is an absolute terror away from their parents.

Edit: Which state is MO?

MO is Missouri.

And I have spanked my daughter - twice, I think. I agree that it's poor negative reinforcement; the only use I've found is actually getting her attention when she's that deep in a tantrum. I can't see that right being given to anyone except a parent, though.

idk Kendall, I was spanked when I was younger, and I'm fairly well-behaved, at least more-so than most of my class mates.

I still disagree with legalizing it in the schools, to many lawsuits, and I'm sure a lot of parents will feel that they're having their parental roles infringed on...then again, most of them are probably more concerned with being their childs friend than parent.

I actually meant primary age children.

ah...

well, my 8 year old brother is better behaved away from my parents than he is with them.

Maybe that's just a difference between American and Canada

I am of the opinion that there IS something to be said for corporal punishment.

That said, there MUST be a procedure! And the person "ordering" the punishment must never be the one who administers it.

The other problem with it (aside from having non-parents allowed to lay their hands on children) is that it relieves parents even more from the responsibility of parenting. My wife teaches in an inner-city school district, and the amount of parenting that these people expect to be done by the school - and not by themselves as the actual parents - is truly both staggering and saddening. If non-scholastic-related punishment is allowed, it absolves these people of even more of what their role should be.

Here in Texas, they re-instituted corporal punishment when I was in middle school; the parents would have to sign a permission document if they were okay with it. I told my mom, "Go ahead and sign the thing if you want. You know the first person who raises a hand at me gets their jaw broken." She didn't sign it.

As to spanking little kids, my mom tells me that it had no effect whatsoever on me, and she'd end up spanking me for the same exact thing every day. She developed a much better strategy; if I started throwing a tantrum, she'd ignore me and walk away (and hide where she could see me), and I eventually just stopped doing that altogether.

Spanking... in school?
Thats just stupid.
I have no problem with it for parents (as long as the child is not harmed, as in broken bones).

I agree. Schools should not be spanking, or doing any kind of physical punishment.

Does that involve P.E? I'm all for banning that.
