HOUSTON -- A suspected drunken driver was charged in connection with the death of a student who was fatally hit seconds after she got off a school bus, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District officials said several Bleyl Middle School students got off the bus in the 13400 block of Cypress Forest Drive near Lynn Drive at about 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constables said a driver, John Winne, ran a stop sign, hit the bus and then hit 13-year-old Nicole Lalime.
"Passing a school bus is a senseless thing," Capt. Paul Staton said. "Obviously, those warning lights and the stop sign, that now is required and comes out from the side of the bus, that's telling you that children are here."
Detectives said Winne kept going.
Lalime was rushed to Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and then transferred to Texas Children's Hospital, where she died at about 7 p.m.
Deputy constables said they tracked down Winne about five miles from the scene. Investigators said a homeowner called the Harris County Sheriff's Office when Winne ran through their front yard and tried to park his car in their back yard.
Winne, 30, was shocked with a Taser gun three times and taken back to the scene where witnesses positively identified him, officials said.
"It is our belief that he was intoxicated at the time of the accident," Chief Mark Herman said.
He was taken to a hospital for treatment for his injuries.
Winne was arrested charged with intoxication manslaughter and failure to stop and render assistance. He had a warrant out for his arrest on a terroristic threat charge.
"I have no information that he's shown remorse for what has occurred," Staton said.
Winne has prior convictions for driving while intoxicated.
Each charge carries a maximum of 20 years in prison if convicted.
Another example of why I support the death penalty. This POS was laughing, and making air kisses at the news cameras as they brought him in.
