System Shock 2

Inspired by Rochey's thread on Vangers, I remembered another game that still stacks up even though it's ten years old.

One of the best games ever made, period. The atmosphere and music lend a lot to the suspense value; I still jump sometimes when I play it. The AI is somewhat adaptive, and some of the enemies are downright scary (they released a patch specifically because people with arachnophobia couldn't play...). The RPG aspect is what set it apart from other games of the era, and it's still a great feature.

Stuff like weapon maintenance, cyber-implants, hacking security terminals and turrets, psi-abilities, weapon modifications, and an array of weapons and armor also were strong points. Honestly, the graphics are the only thing outdated about this game, and those can largely be fixed with a few model and texture mods.

Anyone here played this one?

Never got round to this one, but I heard good things about it.

I did play Deus Ex, which I believe had a similar playing style.

From what I've played of Deus Ex, it's not quite on par with SS2. Of course, it's probably nigh-impossible to find a copy now... Unless... :pirate:

I bought SS2 on the day of release. (And Deus Ex, for that matter, guess what style of games I like?) As to pirating it, it isn't really much of a crime, IMO, as it's long out of print, and legit copies are becoming collectors items: The game was a huge critical hit, was highly influential, but sold very, very poorly.
I believe there are mods available that modernize the primitive graphics and allow it to run on modern systems, but I've not played it for many years.
