True, although I don't think that was what won it.
Well
captained - that's the key bit. Faldo did well, but Azinger was superb - this was the first time in quite a while that the US played as a team rather than as a collection of talented individuals.

Very true, but don't discount both the letdown of some well-experienced Europeans (*cough* Sergio *cough*) and the very clutch play of some American rookies - Kim, B. J. Holmes, and Mahan - which helped overcome the mediocre play of some American vets. Yeah, I'm talking to you, Mickelson.

And strange how it coincided with the absence in the US team of arguably the greatest golfer in the history of the sport.

Not really that strange - as great as Tiger is, he doesn't have a particularly great track record at the Ryder Cup.
