So China got to host the Olympics because...of their stunning international reputation?

I actually find the Olympics extremely annoying, not just because Canada doesn't fund the athlets properly (prompting fundraiseing) but because all the news and papers will be pushing Olympic stories.

The opening ceremony has just finished (well, the athletes are still coming out, but does anyone really care about them?). Gotta say, that was a spectacular show. Probably the best opening I've ever seen. London in 2012 is going to have a lot to live up to.

We've got people from a lot of different countries here. Any Athletes to watch from your home that you know of?
Honestly I'm too busy to follow the Olympics. Mostly I'll poke in on the news from time to time to see how countries are doing in the medals. I'm especially curious how China is going to do, and if any scandals drop as I imagine they've at least been sorely tempted to be creative with who counts as Chinese and whether or not to dope.
I've also heard they've been putting heavy funding into events that countries typically don't put much money or support into (womens weightlifting, air gun) in hopes of picking up a number of medals so they can "win" this Olympics in the final medal count.
Actually on that note some of you are military right? If you find you're a solid shot you might be able to pull off an Olympic visit in the future. As I recall a lot of the people in shooting events are fairly casual, and militaries often have something to provide a little extra training if you're interested in the Olympics.

And the torch is lit, and so ends my interest in the Olympics.
I wonder how team Éire will do.

I'll have to catch it on youtube. I never found the Olympics that exciting. But I do like to hear the medal totals.

I'm not a big fan of the games either, but I like watching the opening ceremonies.

I'll probably watch a bit. My daughter is very interested in the swimming and gymnastics, and my wife in the track and field (she's a former shotputter, jav thrower, and discus thrower - NJ doesn't allow the hammer in high school.) It'll be a good forum to discuss geography and such with my daughter, and I'll watch the team sports - soccer, baseball, etc. - and the tennis.
