Where are they? I know in Europe during the last huge increase that moved the price up around $3 from $2.50 there were riots in Europe and in America. But now that its forcasted to be over $4 by the end of the month but I haven't heard of any riots starting (Cause I want to go to one if I can afford the gas!)

I didn't hear of any riots, though I wouldn't be surprised if there were. It's times like these that make me glad that I don't have much to do with oil (don't drive, don't work at anything oil-related, etc).

That's the problem with the way things work at times like this - EVERYTHING is oil-related. Rising oil prices mean more than just more expensive gasoline and heating oil; groceries cost more, service industries cost more, private contractors/consultants/etc. charge more, etc., etc.

The budget in my wife's school district, for example, is gonna get real screwy next school year, because they contract for bussing - and that's going to be a lot more expensive than when THIS year's budget was approved. Well, school budgets don't just expand on their own, so rising oil prices mean any or all of the following - less paraprofessionals a/o student teachers; a cut in the local union's CBA; lower levels of available social services... you get the idea.

Quite true. Thankfuly, our school doesn't have it's own bus service, so we're free of that worry.

Actually, that's the problem at my wife's district - they contract a bus service.

I always found it odd that Americans need school buses. Literally no one around here buses. Everyone walks/bikes/drives. Are you schools really far away from your suburbs?

I used to walk 45 minutes to school, and 45 minutes back. No buses for me!

And I haven't heard of any riots, either.

It's not really distance so much as the danger of where the kids would be walking. A lot of bussing occurs in inner-city areas, in which young kids would have to cross a lot of busy thoroughfares.

Ah good. I thought your schools were eithter stupidy far away from where people live or your all just really lazy.

Also many parents can't take their kids to school. And a kindergardener shouldn't really be walking 2 miles

Also remember the population density of the US is eight times that of the UK. What that boils down to is that outside of the major Urban zones we're pretty spread out. I grew up in the country, and the nearest school was 15 miles away.

Then there are those of us who can't walk more than a few hundred feet that have to be considered. A trip two miles to school on foot would've taken me six hours at the rate I can maintain.
