Fleeing shoplifter forgets son
Thu Mar 20, 2008 1:43pm EDT

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - A shoplifter looking to make a quick getaway from a Dutch supermarket after stealing a packet of meat left police a crucial piece of evidence -- his 12-year-old son.

In his haste the 45-year-old thief made a solo dash to his car, batting away a supermarket worker who had flung himself on the vehicles' bonnet in a bid to stop the escape.

Police in the southern Dutch town of Kerkrade said they managed to contact the thief via the boy, but he had refused to return and collect his son. The man told officers to get hold of the youngster's mother instead.

The thief later turned himself in Thursday, a police spokeswoman said.

Wow. That's the kind of life-lesson you should explain to your child, not enact for them...

" See, Junior, meat is expensive, so you could steal it like this... But, then you go to jail..."

You know, I'm not a fan of stealing period, but there are rare cases where I'd think it was okay. Probably not in this case, but even when it is justified it shouldn't be done when risking your kids, or your family.

The fact that the guy involved his son at all makes me less than sympathetic towards him.

You know, I bet he didn't even really need the meat

I can make a hell of a meal with a $3 roast stuffed with garlic. You can make that kind of money picking up cans. Trust me, I've been pretty desperate during my life, and I've never resorted to stealing.

What I want to know is why an employee threw himself in front of the car to try and stop the guy stealing a pack of freaking meat. :?

Yeah, great story. What with heroicaly nearly getting yourself killed to save a pack of meat.
I think there's more than one idiot in this particular story.

What would be funny is buckwheat getting fired for breaking the "let them have it policy". If they have one.

Erm....This is certainly a sign of Hollands liberal nature. Even kids can be emplyed as thieves now :P

that liberal attitude is fading away quite rapidly. I am already expecting the goverment to head more and more into a cotrol-freak society, and starting to ban lots of things. Elections have already shown things were moving towards the edge of the political spectrum, most noticably Wilders. Considering the amount of attention he gets, you'll probably know him.
