Religious morons blind themselves by staring at the sun

KOTTAYAM, India, March 11 (UPI) -- Reports in India of a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary in the sky have led about 50 people to blind themselves by staring at the sun.
The visions are said to appear over the former home of a hotel owner in the Kottayam area in southeast India, The Daily Telegraph reported. One hospital in the district reported 48 patients had been admitted with burned retinas since last week, the British newspaper reported.
Churches have warned their congregations that looking at the sun will cause permanent blindness and have told them the supposed miracle is not one.
Before moving out, the hotel owner reportedly had also claimed to have statues of the Virgin Mary that cried honey and bled oils and perfumes.

I've been laughing for the last ten minutes after reading this.
Religious idiots: Proving Darwin right since 1859 AD.

I'm not sure if this should be chalked up specifically to religious idiocy or big-standard idiocy. I can see (no pun intended) UFO nutters, for example, doing something similar if someone claimed there was a flying saucer going over.
Still pretty funny though.

True, but I mentioned religion because they were staring up at the sun in the hope of seeing the virgin Mary.
In any case, they're morons.

Well, I doubt anyone is going to disagree with me when I say they're morons.
Hell, I bet even they realised that.

I think you're giving them too much credit.

Yeah, they're idiots. Religious or otherwise, that's just plain dumb.

Even I can't support these guys. I was never one for faith, but I know some people who are, one of my aunts is a nun, and even she wouldn't be so blinded by faith that she would let herself be blinded by the sun.

That's great. If there is a G-d, and heaven, and all that; I hope that when one of these dimwits dies, they meet G-d and ask him why he let them be blinded for believing a matter of faith. And I hope He tells them, "Why were you staring at the sun, you idiot?"

You know what the best bit is? The fact that these idiots kept staring at the sun even after the church told them there was nothing there.
I mean, it's not like the church has any knowledge of this sorta thing, right?

I guess it went something like this:
"We're gonna stare at the sun because of our relentless, dogmatic dedication to the ideals of the Church."
"Ummm... the Church says that there's nothing there."
"Why would we listen to the Church?!"
