New OG Trek

None of the new ST really feel like ST. For all the issues Enterprise had, it was still Star Trek.

Do you think we will ever see a show that’s in the same tone as the trek of the last millennium?

You know… aside from the Orville.

I've still been unable to get through Enterprise, despite multiple attempts, to be honest.

I rewatch all pre-Abrams films, as well as all three of the TNG-era Treks (DS9 being my favourite), but I have tried all of the post Voyager stuff except Prodigy, and just not feeling it.

I have watched every Abrams Trek film, but only once. Everything pre-Abrams I have seen dozens of times.

I honestly don't know if anything will come again that feels like True Trek, but at the same time whilst I may not be a fan of all this new stuff, I am glad that Star Trek has seen new life and it has gotten new found interest through the new material. It has led others to also find the earlier stuff, like TNG, DS9, VOY, and even TOS.

I haven't seen The Orville yet, but I have recently switched from Sky Stream to Disney Plus (saved a tonne), and they have Seasons 1-3 of The Orville on there, so when I finish the current show, I shall likely give that one a go.

But, all things considered, I don't think there will be a Trek show any time in the near future that appeals to earlier fans of the universe.

SNW comes as close to the feel of TOS that I have seen yet, after watching the first season the more emotional side of my psyche went "this IS Star Trek". What i've seen of Orville is a direct homage (as advertised) with comedic overtones.

I am kinda wondering how TOS fans felt when they first saw TNG. Maybe it's different because TNG didn't follow four other shows and TOS was so 60's that the only closest thing to TNG was the movies.

I mean Disco Trek went in a whole direction when it comes to appearence along nevermind Disco itself. Something I won't go in now. But Strange New Worlds does feel the close to Trek. But I submit, despite being a cartoon and the comedy, Lower Decks has a stronger connection to Old School Trek.

There was some grumbling from the TOS grognards, it was a new look, a bit more vigorous in pointing out the moral of the story. The actors and actresses took a little time to grow into the parts, and the characters to grow into the setting. In hindsight it of course worked out great, at the time it didn't meet some folks expectations. For me it was a new set of adventures with a different feel to it.

For me, the issue with the newer stuff is nothing to do with the apparent "wokeness" or anything like that, which I have seen a lot of people complain about in FB groups before my self-exile from most social media.

It's is more about how they told the story, and also, particularly for Discovery, the story in general. I just couldn't get behind it all. There were bits I liked, but not enough to keep the effort of watching it, and to be quite honest, some of the stuff I couldn't stand simply outweighed the rest.

Picard I did at least make it through all three seasons, and probably enjoyed about 20-30% of it.

Whilst earlier Trek had a lot of inconsistencies, etc, it just seemed to have more of a pull / impact on me.

TNG's Drumhead for instance, still can touch me in my soul by Picard's words. All the three TNG-era had certain episodes like that, and plenty of others that were just completely enjoyable and told a great story. There's always going to be a few duds, especially in a 20+ episode season, but I don't mind that, because the good and great episodes give it the weight to push past the few duds.

With a lot of this new stuff, there's nothing. I don't feel anything. I watch it, but it feels empty. So I don't bother.

That may not make sense, I am not the best at explaining stuff, but I hope that some of it may be intelligible.

From the moment they introduced the SNWs crew on Disco, I knew it would make a terrific re-imagining of classic Trek and when it finally premiered, it felt very much like TOS in vibe and scope.
