There's a difference between misleading the fanbase and alienating the fan base.

I just find it hard to believe, with all the secrecy surrounding this thing, that somehow the whole plot has been leaked nine months before the movie comes out. *shrug*

Thats another thing that pissed me off, calling the main guy Nero.

NERO!

How very cliche.

Why? It's not like the script has been leaked or anything like that. Merely vague details. We still don't really know that much, and when you consider the amount of people working on the film it was almost inevitable that some stuff was going to be leaked.

Actually, it fits. The species is called "Romulans," for chrissakes; they have a subject race called "Remans;" and there was a rank (in TOS, at least) called "centurion." They have a Senate, and officials known as "praetors." The only way you could make the parallels more obvious is if you said that Romulus had seven hills, and the capital was on the banks of the Tiber.

Of course, that begs the question of why an interstellar alien race names themselves after a long dead Terran nation.

That way madness lies.

...or why the Vulcans chose to name themselves after an ancient god.

When they say "drilling rig" it could mean anything. For all we know it's some gigantic complex that covers half a continent with a billion drills dropping antimatter bombs down the shafts. Or it might be something that just looks vaguely like a drilling rig but does something completely different, like calling the Son'a Collector a "sail ship".

As for planet destruction, not bothered by that. There are endless quotes about the Enterprise being able to destroy the surface of the planet. There's a TNG quote that a handful of ships can do it in short order. I've heard a lot of people waffle on and on about how we must interpret all that to mean something other than it says. Well, guess not. I'm delighted. :)

Smooth headed Romulans, also delighted. My fear was that they would go beyond the TNG look and make them even more alien, giving us yet another problem, But they're sticking to the TOS version of things, which is fine by me.

A sword fight... well. Maybe. If it's a case of "I will put my phaser away and fight with a sword for the sake of honour" then I'll wince, bigtime. But perhaps the participants will be unarmed when a fight breaks out and they grab a couple of swords from a display on the wall or something. Perhaps Sulu gets captured and it's a game to them, gladiator style. Until I see it, I'm not passing judgment.

Anyway, while I have concerns, I have some hopes for this movie. I'm determined not to walk into it with a "this must suck" attitude.

As to the swordfight, the reference was actually to Sulu using a sword, not necessarily a blade-to-blade duel. We know from TOS:"The Naked Time" that Sulu owns a rapier; if it was a situation of "let me grab anything at hand with which I can fight," then I wouldn't have a problem with it at all.

Indeed. It could be perfectly fine, but it could just as easily be awful.

It could be done well... but I'm not going to hold my breath.

The way I see it is, how would everyone react if, while waiting eagerly for TNG to come out, an actor working on it said, "The show will feature a stern, bald, frenchman who is a brilliant diplomat as captain. The chief engineer will be played by the star of a popular children's educational show, and wears futuristic sunglasses. There is a very interesting child on the bridge crew who may have unlimited potential, and menacing enemy ships that look like blocks. Our main goal over the run of the show will be to get the whole senior bridge crew together for a game of poker."

Obviously, TNG was a series and not a movie, but I think it shows how awful something can sound when someone throws out a few parts without expounding on how they will come together as a whole.

I would not be surprised if they are looking to do a relaunch of Trek. Relaunches revived (understatement) Batman, and kept 007 out of the retirement home. I feel a little ill about seeing 40+ years of continuity that I grew up with fall to the wayside, though. One way or another, I think this movie will make or break Trek for the next decade or so.
