They get better. After Unity, things pick up. Remember the parasites from TNG who take over starfleet? The come back and we learn more about the Trill. It's pretty interesting.

One of my favorites. Who is actually featured in earlier books.
The Lost Era 2311 and
The Battle for Betazed are the two I remember but I think he's been around in other works too.
