What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

It's acclimation. When my daughter was young (she was verbal very early, and hasn't shut up since) and in that hard-to-understand stage you describe, I still knew to what she was referring because I was around while those references were developing. Before the age of 1, for example, I knew that "pea-ba" meant peanut butter, because I was around to witness the association of the term with the actual object.

The only English movie accent which I had a hard time was (interestingly) American Brad Pitt's in Snatch. One which he obviously did lots of research on, and was well done, IMHO.

What do you call Michael Caine's accent? I like his voice.

Depends on what film. Normally he doesnt have much of an accent from what i've seen. If you've seen the italian job, then thats london. dunno what part of london, but london all the same.

I'm with Mikey; I rarely have trouble with accents, and Brad Pitt's in Snatch was one of the notable exceptions. I usually have to translate for my mom when we watch movies with any accents (including deep-south redneck). I myself have none. Just bland, straightforward American english. I can mimic a passable Australian, and my Irish one is decent, along with whatever you call that accent that British royals always seem to have.

The houndstooth-check scarf only adds to the effect.

Maybe it's just an American affect, but things like a hound's-tooth check, glenn plaid, or (especially) tweed jackets tend to evoke the most uptight, professorial British stereotypical images.
