I've seen stuff like that before and it is cool, it's just a bit much to call it an ecosystem. It's not a system, it's a plant.

Technically, as it supports itself, I think it does qualift. What would the minimal requirements for an ecosystem be?

I'd qualify it as a system, as it's water cycle and reuse of biodegraded materials are self-contained. That being said, even though it might technically qualify as a system, such qualifications don't mean anything more than the fact that it's a plant in a jug.

The trick is to only water them a little, but often.

that and the right amount of light. i never have a good spot inside to just leave 'em.

Yeah, it's cool... but not quite an ecosystem. Unless there's bugs in it. Or a really tiny snake.
