You mean you like Picard's "French" accent? :P

Seriously, would you want to be subjected for an hour at a time of Jonathan Frakes or Whoopi Goldberg putting on an affected and undefinable British accent?

Actually, yes if it means that there were SOME different accents. I'd like to see a german accent, a russian even a Arabian accent once in a while. But NOO they all have to american.

With globilisation accents are going to be less and less defined.

No offense to americans, but i'd rather not exist than have an American accent.

Hell I'm a 5th generation New Zealander with a slight British accent due to all the British TV my family watched growing up. Most people dont realise I was born and raised here, they think I moved here a few years ago and my accent is slowly going away.

Sometimes with the trek situation, i find it a tad racist. They are literally ALL american. Apart from Picard. Or at least, have American accents. Is it so impossible for them to have a russian accent?

American's aren't a race dude. But it is insulting. Honestly though I wouldn't trust Trek to portray anyone but an American, practically all their characters (other than the main cast) are two demensional stereotypes. Especially aliens, why would they put any more effort into a Brit/Canadian/Russian etc?

The only time NZ was shown of or heard about in trek was when Tom Paris was there in prison, which is stupid cause everyone knows Australia is the prison island.

Could be worse... you could have a British one.

Oh... sorry.

When I think of a British accent, I think of the stereotypical cultured one "hip hip ho ho" and all that. When I think of an American accent I think of the stereotypical southern redneck.

The reality is that each country has dozens of different ones. Hell I can drive from Ottawa to North Bay (500km or so) and hear at least three different ones.

Thank Paramount for the lack of diversity. The geniuses who created a teaser for Enterprise and mysteriously left out Benjamin Sisko for the Legacy of Star Trek Captains promo. Not only are there more Americans, but there are more white Americans in the future than anyone else. I can't believe I found it annoying that there was a lack of diversity among aliens, when there is a lack of diversity among humans.

Well, IU, it can be rationalized somewhat with Teaos' explanation. Increased globalization will erode many accent differences. OOU, I chalk it up to suspension of disbelief - they speak modern (21st century) English on the show as well.

As far as dialectic differences, I've mentioned before on this forum the BBC documentary that interviewed a number of people from East Anglia (no offense to Reliant - I'm led to believe that's near your home,) and they actually needed to subtitle these people's English for a British audience.

I quite often find young children hard to understand since they tend to run together words and not pronounce words properly. But then there parents can understand them perfectly.

Depends where in East Anglia. Where i come from in East Anglia, is quite chavvish. they certainly have crappy linguistic skills, but they are understandable. Norfolk is a completely different story.

I have little accent. mine is quite traditional english, with little of whats know 'Hampshire rose' Twinges

I know I need subtitles when I watch "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels." Or "Trainspotting." I am American though.
