Better in what way. We're certainly programmed by evolution not to eat rotting food, and on the most part that's a very good thing.

Generally, spots like that are not rotten just either bruised or ripened.

If an apple has a brown spot (bruise) I usually do not eat that part either.

I still can't believe that a statistic like that was mentioned about tossing salad and people are still discussing bruised fruit.
