Europe has about 2 millenia of internal conflicts and their respective government structure and culture to forget while trying to allow the current union. I'd think the whole endeavour is quite more ambitious than uniting a group of states that were coming out of their teenage rebellious stride.
You'd have a point...
if anyone had made a value judgement of the EU's internal freedom
or called the American system "superior." Try to read what you're talking about before you try to get all indignant and self-righteous. My explanation was a rationale for
why things are different in the EU than within the U.S., not an indictment of such.
If, as it seems, your are unable or unwilling to actually find out what someone says before commenting on it, then don't comment at all.

So in other words, it means that not even all of europe, just the EU, is one hell of an economical power and that is considering most of those nations having a socio-economical system the more conservative minded folks in the US would probably describe as communism.
I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss europe as major player in the world, if I were you. Sleeping giants are bound to awake at some time, especially if someone makes as much noise as the USA.

The EU isn't a sleeping giant, its a bunch of angry neighbors more interested in screwing each other over then to handle the world. Its the little brother of the UN.

IMHO the only thing keeping EU together is the thought that if Germany isn't kept distracted they'll get pissed off again and go for a "walk" through France & Poland again.

Sounds about right.

Germany never wanted war, just peace.
A little piece of Poland, and a great big piece of France...

Shamelessly stolen from Churchill, albeit slightly tweaked. The original was at a banquet during one of the later Big Three conferences, when he proposed a toast "to Comrade Stalin, whose actions display a desire for nothing but peace", followed by a muttered comment to Eden "a piece of Poland, a piece of Czechoslovakia, a piece of Romania".

Is that documented or apocryphal? If it's true, my respect for Winnie just went up.
I still give props to cousin Mel for turning into a song.
