With Regard to RN SSW usage, even in exercises, the Campbeltown never fired her own SSM compliment. They used helicopters all the time.

Well that's the nice thing about VLS systems isn't it? Load them up with land attack missiles to go terrorist busting, refit them with anti ship and SAM missiles if you have to fight somebody decent. Best of all worlds.

VLS is good but missle systems can be jammed, deflected off course, or just fail completly. Allways good to have a good old fashion 5 inch gun to del with those annoying little problems that sometimes crop up. And has for only haveing 3 guns (assuming you meen 3 inch gun plus 2 25mm guns p/s) I would expect her to have some machine gun emplacments as well (even our coast guard have that) that would make up for the lack of fire power especially given the ships mission profile. A machine gun could esily deal with most of the pirates speed boats.

Thing is she isn't listed for having them and there are no visible mounts. That means she's a 3 gun ship. A coast guard patrol cutter the equal to this frigate... or what they are calling a frigate.

They may call it a frigate but in reality it is just a patrol ship with that kind of armament. Its sorta like the type 22 frigates, only in reverse order. We call them frigates, but they are more like small destroyers from what I am told. (its great having a close relative who has served on these things.)

These days there's very little difference between frigates and destroyers in terms of size - the only difference is their primary role, with the destroyers being AAW and frigates ASW.

That makes sense. To be fair, dad's outdated naval wise. You know, he was on one of the old Leanders, and they haven't been around for a long time. Juno was still his first love though. Barring whatshername french girl he dated....
