I see what you mean. I saw the potential for a great philosophical exploration, like in TMP, or some other better example that I can't think of ATM. It didn't feel like that was the point of the movie though. It felt like that used to be the point of the movie back in the first draft of the screenplay or something. However, being an identical twin, I'm sure I have some special shiny wisdom regarding this idea...me,myself and I wrote:
The whole "now we see through a glass darkly bit." What makes us who we are? Our genetics or our choices? Because Shinzon is a maniacle genocidal lunatic does that mean Jean-Luc Picard is capable of the same thing? Because B-4 looks like and has Datas memories does that make him Data now? We cherish our position in the universe because we thing there's only one of us. Now there's two. What does that make us? A shadow? An echoe? Do our genes predetermine what we do or is it primarily our choices that dicate our lives? Etc. Etc.
