Re: So the world's about to end...
Question about the season-series for television. In the US, 'series' refers to the entire show while 'season' refers to shows produced over a certain length of time within said series. In the UK, at least, series refers to that block of shows produced over a length of time. So what do you call the entire show? Or did I just answer my own question?

Show, series, programme, take your pick.

Yeah, you don't really call it anything specific. The word series can be used for either - you could say "Oh, the BBC is thinking of making a new comedy series about politics" or "Hey, the new series of Doctor Who starts next week."

If the UK became states, some political ideology in your country will have drastically changed.GrahamKennedy wrote:Can you imagine how the US right wing would react to the prospect of 30 million dedicated liberals being thrown into the voting pool?

Agreed, current legal interpretation is very supportive of a citizen's right to firearm ownership it seems. The gun thing would be a big issue.
This could be addressed at the local and state level. And losing a big chunk of the welfare state would be a real deal breaker.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs could recognize the Monarchy and establish certain reservations for the indigenous people of Great Britain, Ireland, and associated nearby locales. For instance the Isle of Man.Course getting rid of the Queen would be a big stumbling block. Not for me, but a lot of Brits really love the old girl.
Connacht, Ulster, Leinster, Munster, Scotland, Cornwall, Wales, Wessex, England, Mercia, and North Umbria.
If we are dreaming, might as well include Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Greenland and most or all of Mexico. Imagine the size of the House of Representatives!

No, I meant that was how you all spoke back then. The day became important and so the way of saying it remained, even when you changed your way of saying dates. The alternative is that you are suggesting that when you got Independence that you all started to say dates differently just to be different. I can't see that that would be a very sustainable or effective form of revolt, especially as there was nothing to revolt about any more.Mikey wrote:Considering the local import of that day, I'm inclined to doubt that.IanKennedy wrote:More likely a left over from the way you used to do it before you split off.Mikey wrote:The only time I hear that usage commonly around here is in "the fourth of July," and that's only because it's become a sort of idiomatic proper noun in reference to Independence Day.That would be like the French using a monarchial reference for Bastille Day.

I understand. Likely, though the rebellious mindset may have just begun using a different naming convention just to preserve the feeling of separation of that day from the mundane.

Yes, but the standard back then would have been the English order so saying the 4th of July wouldn't have been any different from the norm.Mikey wrote:I understand. Very true, though I was referring to the rebellious mindset of typical middle America in general, rather than the general political feeling in the 18th century.

Ah, I thought you meant why you say 4th of July, rather than why you say April 1st.Mikey wrote:Very true, though I was referring to the rebellious mindset of typical middle America in general, rather than the general political feeling in the 18th century.

Well, the latter's just the obverse of the former, isn't it?

Re: So the world's about to end...
I think it still works. A conscious effort to change the convention to saying "May 20th" instead of "20th of May" requires a conscious effort to except "4th of July" from that convention, little different from making such an effort to use the archaic "4th of July" if the convention had otherwise changed organically.IanKennedy wrote:Not when you are considering intent.Mikey wrote:Well, the latter's just the obverse of the former, isn't it?
