So says Alex. As far as Bladerunner, there is allusion to further background in the novel on which the movie is based, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. Much as I love Ridley Scott, he didn't create that world.

True enough, what I should have said was Scott did a good job bringing it to the screen.
